A UIBC (Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity) test measures the “reserve” capacity of your blood to transport iron. Iron is carried through your bloodstream by a protein called transferrin. While some of this protein is already carrying iron, the UIBC tells us how much of that protein is currently “empty” and available to pick up more.
This test is rarely performed alone; it is almost always part of an Iron Profile to help doctors distinguish between different types of anemia or to detect iron overload.
