The “Acid-Fast” stain (commonly the Zieh-Neelsen or Kinyoun stain) is a special laboratory technique. Unlike most bacteria, TB-causing organisms (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) have a waxy cell wall that resists standard dyes. Once they are stained with a red dye and washed with acid, they “hold on” to the color. Under a microscope, they appear as bright red, rod-shaped structures.
