An S. Aspartate Amino-Transferase (AST) test—also known as SGOT—is a blood test used to identify tissue damage, primarily in the liver and heart. AST is an enzyme found in several organs, including the liver, heart, skeletal muscles, kidneys, and brain.
When these tissues are injured, AST leaks into the bloodstream. Because it is found in so many places, doctors almost always pair it with an ALT test to determine exactly which organ is suffering.
