PSA is an enzyme produced by the prostate to help keep semen in a liquid state. A small amount of this protein naturally leaks into the bloodstream. When the prostate is irritated, inflamed, enlarged, or affected by cancerous growth, more PSA “leaks” out, causing blood levels to rise.
