PIVKA-II – MISCELLANEOUS

PIVKA-II (Protein Induced by Vitamin K Absence or Antagonist-II), also known as DCP (Des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin), is a specialized tumor marker primarily used for the detection and monitoring of Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of primary liver cancer.

Under normal conditions, the liver uses Vitamin K to convert prothrombin into its functional form. When liver cells become cancerous, this process is disrupted, and an abnormal, non-functional protein (PIVKA-II) is released into the bloodstream.
