A Pericardial Fluid Examination is a specialized laboratory analysis of the fluid found in the pericardium—the thin, double-layered sac that surrounds the heart.
Normally, only a small amount of clear fluid (about 15–50ml) exists to lubricate the heart’s movement. When too much fluid builds up (Pericardial Effusion), it can compress the heart and prevent it from pumping effectively. Analyzing this fluid is the only way to determine if the cause is an infection, an autoimmune disease, or cancer.
