The instrument trolley is the “staging area” for every scalpel, forceps, and suture used in surgery. While the trolley is draped with sterile sheets before an operation, the metal surface underneath must still be disinfected to prevent “strike-through” contamination (where moisture allows bacteria to move from the trolley surface through the drape to the instruments).
