Invented by Hans Christian Gram in 1884, this test uses a series of dyes to color bacteria. Because different bacteria have different cell wall structures, they react differently to the stains. This test provides a “preliminary identity” within minutes, which is often enough to start life-saving treatment for infections like meningitis, pneumonia, or sepsis.
