Ascites is the abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Because the concentration of bacteria in this fluid can be very low, the lab uses Automated Technology (similar to blood culture systems). The fluid is injected into specialized bottles that are monitored every few minutes by sensors for signs of bacterial growth.
