Overview
The Barium Swallow Test is a special diagnostic imaging procedure used to examine the esophagus (food pipe) and swallowing mechanism.
In this test, the patient drinks a contrast liquid called barium, which coats the lining of the esophagus. X-ray images are then taken to detect narrowing, blockages, ulcers, reflux, or abnormal swallowing disorders.
It is commonly recommended for patients with difficulty swallowing, throat discomfort, or suspected esophageal problems.
