Mycobacterium tuberculosis has a unique, waxy cell wall that does not absorb standard dyes. The “Acid-Fast” stain (such as the Ziehl-Neelsen stain) uses a bright red dye that these bacteria “hold onto” even when washed with acid. Under a microscope, they appear as thin, red, rod-shaped structures against a blue background.
