While a “Rapid Strep Test” gives results in minutes, it can sometimes miss infections. A Culture is much more thorough; the swab is wiped across a nutrient-rich agar plate and incubated for 24 to 48 hours. If bacteria grow, the lab then performs a Sensitivity test by placing small discs of various antibiotics on the bacteria to see which ones stop the growth.
