A culture test involves placing your sputum sample in a specialized “growth medium” (a petri dish with nutrients) and incubating it at body temperature. If pathogens are present, they will multiply into visible colonies. Once the germ is identified, the lab performs a Sensitivity test by exposing the grown bacteria to various antibiotics to see which ones stop the growth.
