The pleural space is the thin, fluid-filled gap between the lungs and the chest wall. Normally, this space contains very little liquid. In certain infections, fluid builds up (a “pleural effusion”). Because TB bacteria have waxy cell walls, they require the Acid-Fast (AFB) staining technique to be seen under a microscope.
