Mycobacteria are notoriously slow-growing. While common bacteria like E. coli grow in 24 hours, Mycobacterium tuberculosis can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks to form visible colonies. The lab uses specialized nutrient-rich “broths” and solid agars (like Lowenstein-Jensen medium) to coax these stubborn bacteria into growing.
