While both viruses are closely related and can infect either the mouth or the genitals, they have traditional “preferences”:
- HSV-1 (Type 1): Primarily associated with “Cold Sores” or fever blisters around the mouth. However, it is now a very common cause of genital herpes due to oral-to-genital transmission.
- HSV-2 (Type 2): Primarily associated with “Genital Herpes.” It is almost exclusively transmitted through sexual contact.
