The Free Androgen Index (FAI) is a calculated value used to estimate the amount of “biologically active” testosterone in the bloodstream. While a standard blood test measures Total Testosterone, most of that hormone is tightly bound to proteins and cannot be used by the body’s cells. The FAI provides a clearer picture of the androgen (male hormone) status by comparing testosterone to its primary carrier protein.
