Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone produced primarily by the interstitial cells of the kidneys (and in small amounts by the liver). It serves as the primary messenger that tells the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells (RBCs). The body monitors oxygen levels in the blood; when oxygen is low, the kidneys release EPO to boost the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity.
