Cystatin C is a low-molecular-weight protein produced at a constant rate by all nucleated cells in the body. It is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, specifically the glomeruli. Unlike Creatinine, which is influenced by muscle mass, age, and diet, Cystatin C is considered a more stable and “pure” marker of kidney function.
