CD8 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that serves as a co-receptor for the T-cell receptor. It specifically recognizes cells that are “flagged” as abnormal.
- The Diagnostic Role: In pathology, CD8 is used to map the immune response within a biopsy. Seeing a high density of CD8 cells often indicates an active “search and destroy” mission by the immune system.
- The IHC Advantage: By using IHC on a tissue section, pathologists can see if CD8 cells are successfully penetrating a tumor (good sign) or if they are being kept at the “border” by the cancer’s defenses.
