An LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase) test measures the amount of an enzyme called LDH in your blood. This enzyme is found in almost all your body’s tissues—including the heart, liver, kidneys, muscles, and lungs.
When these cells are damaged or destroyed, LDH is released into the bloodstream. Because LDH is present in so many places, a high level serves as a general “alarm system” for tissue damage, though it doesn’t tell your doctor exactly where the damage is on its own.
